Are you tired of being embarrassed by your bad breath?

Posted on 22 May, 2015 at 10:30

Bad breath is commonly referred to as halitosis in the dental profession. Bad breath is defined as an unpleasant odor in the mouth that can sometimes be persistent or even intermittent. It is important to realize that although bad breath can be embarassing at times, you are not alone! Many individuals just like yourself do suffer from some form of bad breath. Lets break this down for you as simply as possible.

Most of the time the bacteria that live in our mouth is the main culprit for having that embarrasing, stinky breath. Bacteria require warmth and moisture in order to grow and multiply. Our mouth is a perfect "breeding ground" for bacteria to grow, especially on the back of the tongue and cheecks. Quite simply put, think of your mouth as a "party room" for the bacteria to multiply.

"Morning breath" as we commonly know it as, usually is considered to be normal. This type of bad breath most often happens due to the decreased saliva flow in our mouth while we sleep at night. Our mouth becomes fairly dry at night while we sleep, making it easier for bacteria to grow on our cheeks and tongue area. Thus, causing that embarassing, dreaded bad beath!

But wait, there's good news! Most dental related bad breath can be prevented and treated fairly easily. Let's look at the causes of bad breath.

Causes of bad breath?

  • Poor dental hygiene - not brushing and flossing daily or improper technique
  • Periodontal (gum) disease
  • Respiratory tract infections - lung disease, other
  • External agents - onions, garlic, coffee, cigarette smoking, other
  • Dry mouth
  • Systemic Ilnesses - diabates, sinus infections, throat infections, other

So now that we know what causes bad breath, what can we do to prevent this unwanted foul odor?

As mentioned above, dental related bad breath is usually preventable and easily treated.

  • Visit your Registered Dental Hygienist and Dentist regularly for an exam and professional teeth cleaning
  • Brush your teeth at least 2x/day and floss daily
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Chew sugar-free gum
  • Sugarless lozenges

Visit Melissa at Life Long Smiles for a complete dental hygiene assessment and treatment!

What you can expect on your visit with Melissa
